renovation of the one-bedroom duplex apartment in a brownstone building involved the total upgrade of one and half bathrooms, replacing all cabinets and appliances as well as opening up the kitchen by taking down an existing wall, exposing beams in the living room, and replacing the traditional stairway with a steel stairway with open risers to visually widen the space. the the goal of having flexible and configurable space in mind, an island on casters was added to augment counter space. in the same spirit, sliding french doors replace a solid wall in the upstairs area which used to separate the bedroom and work space.
